Data visualisation

On 8 October 2025, Prof. Dr. Rik Vosters (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium) delivered in Vigo an interactive workshop as part of the IDAES doctoral training programme, open to junior and senior researchers at the universities of Vigo, A  Coruña and Santiago de Compostela. Prof. Vosters surveyed principles and practices of “Data Visualisation for Research in Linguistic Variation”. We examined diverse types of data and design methods for good visualisations, going  over e.g. dotcharts, boxplots, scatterplots and many others. We also explored how they can be used to effectively represent distributions, proportions and trends. We applied these principles to a set of examples, evaluated their effectiveness and discussed ways to improve instances of existing visualisations. This has been a great opportunity to learn about and test valuable techniques.
